I moved from the Windsor area to Toronto and bought my first home in Danforth Village in 1978. I remember the excitement of becoming a homeowner and the fear of buying the wrong home or overpaying for it.
Though I've moved a couple of times since then, I've never forgotten what it was like to make that offer or later on to negotiate the sale. And yes, sometimes I wondered if my Realtor was acting in my best interest, or their own.
When I became a Toronto Real Estate Agent in 1985, I set out to build a real estate practice based on a 'client-first' philosophy. I wanted every client to know that I would put their interests first. Since then, I have personally handled well over 500 transactions and negotiated well over 1,000 offers as a Real Estate Broker. Most of those were referrals from happy clients!
I'm passionate about helping others discover, enjoy, and profit from living in Toronto. And I'm more than willing to share my Real Estate expertise with anyone who shares an interest in our East End or Downtown communities.
The heart of my business is the new client who's been referred to me by a very happy past client. In fact 80 to 90% of my business comes from repeat and referral clients - every year!
It means that you’ll be treated like a ‘Client for Life’ – and not like ‘the deal of the week’. It may take time, but at some point, every client comes to realize that I really do put their interests first.
My clients tell me that this is more important than my experience, market knowledge or negotiating skills. They need to know that I'll give an honest opinion on property value, and that I won't hold back when I see something that's wrong.
When you buy your property, I prefer to act as real estate consultant instead of a salesperson. My job is to help you make an informed decision about real estate. That means disclosing everything I know about a property, whether it’s good or bad – especially if it would affect how much you’d pay for it (or whether you’d buy it at all!)
When selling your property, you can expect a carefully researched Market Valuation, and a written marketing plan, with an emphasis on digital marketing. I’ll spell out exactly what I’ll do to sell your home – and then do it. No surprises.
Whether you’re buying or selling, using a local Realtor who works by referral and has a client-first philosophy is a great way to do business. I hope you’ll appreciate just how different it is.
The following excerpts are taken from actual testimonial emails and letters sent by my by past clients. Where possible, the full text is shown on the 'Testimonials' page.
"John was highly recommended to me by a friend. He patiently took time to find out about my needs and wants for a home, and asked all the right questions. He took the time to educate me (a first time home buyer), explain the process to me, and provided excellent guidance that helped me make good decisions along the journey. I couldn’t be more delighted with the end result."

"In March of 2011, I decided to sell my condominium rental property. Selling the condominium was tough because the property was occupied by a tenant who was not eager to leave. John handled this gingerly. He treated my tenant with great courtesy and consideration. As a result my tenant was accommodating, allowed extended showings of the condominium, and in the end we received 3 offers. I would be happy to recommend John Helfrich to any of my friends or acquaintances who are looking for an agent."

I am a proud supporter of the The Children's Miracle Network and I make a generous donation to the Children’s Miracle Network at the close of every single transaction. This donation goes directly to the Toronto Hospital for Sick Children, the Children's Miracle Network member hospital that serves ill and injured children from the GTA and surrounding communities. By choosing to work with me you’ll make a difference in the lives and health of many local Toronto children.
When the Toronto District School Board withdrew funding for the primary school breakfast program for kids who needed it, I joined other RE/MAX Hallmark agents to provide funding and volunteers to keep the program alive. I helped serve breakfast once a week for 2 years at Secord School in the Main and Danforth area.
In January 2008, I climbed to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania, Africa, 19,400 feet above sea level and raised over $20,000 in donations for the CCAC. Just as important, the trek – and the reason behind it, received widespread media attention. I went on to do several on-air and print interviews to spread the word about the need for early screening to prevent this terrible disease. (View Picassa web album)
