Stand Up Paddleboarding (SUP) One more reason Life's Better in The Toronto Beaches

There's a recent addition to our lake view. StandUp PaddleBoarding, (SUP), is the new water-sport that's exploding in popularity. In simplest terms it's standing on a giant surfboard and propelling yourself along with a single ended paddle. SUP is a water-sport that can be enjoyed by people of all ages and fitness levels, everywhere there is water. It can be a serene and peaceful form of gentle exercise or exciting and physically demanding, but however you do it, SUP is great for your body. Training on unbalanced surfaces is very effective for building the core muscle groups, (stomach and back).
Standup paddleboarding, in one form or another, has been around for over a thousand years. The modern version originated in Hawaii and was used to teach large groups of beginner surfers. In Hawaii, where ocean swells are constant, paddleboarders can catch waves and cover great distances, surfing one wave after another. In fact there are inter-island SUP races covering 20 miles or more. When the waves don’t cooperate, the paddle provides the power and it’s almost effortless to move the board.
It just makes sense that SUP would be a big hit in the Beaches. SUP-boards are lighter than kayaks and easier to store. There are no moving parts, which makes it simpler than windsurfing. It is safe and does not require extensive lessons or special conditions such as kite-boarding, and it’s much cheaper than sailing. Whether you SUP on the surf, a river or in the Beaches on Lake Ontario it is a great way to introduce water-sports into your life and enjoy the nature around you.
Alot has happened in the 4 years since I wrote this post. Stand Up Paddleboarding has exploded in popularity, everywhere there's water. We opened a SUP school, teaching and renting SUP boards at Kew/Balmy Beach and introduced nearly a thousand new paddlers to the sport. And most recently, I've opened a shop selling and renting all kinds of SUP and beach and cottage gear, right here in the Beach. It's called Beach Toyz.
